Details
A wonderfully tactile French majolica jug by the celebrated Sarreguemines house. Its lower body wrapped in a trompe l'oeil rope texture rendered in beautiful relief, contrasting with a smooth honey-glazed upper body and neck. The rope-wound handle is absolutely charming. A piece that looks as though it has been plucked straight from a Provençal kitchen and is every bit as good in use as it is on display. Generous enough for water, lemonade, or bunch of flowers. Even as a utensil vessel. The yellow itself is softened so the tone lends more neutral than sunshine itself which is perfect for placing into any interior setting.
Listing is for one jug. Edition 1 of 1.

Style
Sarreguemines was one of France's most storied and prolific ceramics manufacturers, established in the late 18th century in the Lorraine region. By the mid-20th century the manufactory was producing a range of tactile, trompe l'oeil domestic wares that translated traditional craft motifs - rope, basketwork, wicker - into glazed earthenware with great skill and warmth. This jug is a fine example of that tradition, its honey-amber glaze and sculptural rope relief placing it firmly within the charming domestic aesthetic of postwar French ceramic production.
