Style
The tabouret (from the French tabour, meaning “drum”) originated in the 17th century, when small backless stools were used as portable seating at court. Over time, this elegant court form was adapted by provincial craftsmen into a more rustic, utilitarian version for farmhouses and ateliers, which saw renewed popularity in the 1910s–1930s, particularly in Provence and Brittany workshops producing meubles rustiques. This term refers to handcrafted rural furniture originating from the French countryside, typically produced from the 17th century through to the early 20th century. These pieces were made by local artisans and provincial joiners, and were designed for everyday domestic use - simple, durable, and rooted in the rhythms of rural life.
