Vallauris French Majolica Tomato Dish

$55

Details
A delightful French majolica dish modelled in the form of a ripe tomato, its deep burgundy-red glaze richly applied over a sculpted earthenware body, with vivid green modelled leaves and stem forming the handle. Shallow and wide, this is the kind of piece that stops a room - equally at home holding olives or sea salt on a summer table, a few rings on a dressing table, garlic and herbs in the kitchen, or simply displayed on a shelf as a small sculptural object. A piece full of personality and the unmistakable warmth of French domestic craft.

Listing is for one dish. Edition 1 of 1.

Style
This dish belongs to the proud French tradition of trompe l'oeil majolica, in which everyday objects - fruits, vegetables, leaves - were rendered in ceramic with playful naturalism and vivid colour. The tradition flourished across French workshops from the late 19th century through the mid-20th century, particularly in the ateliers of Vallauris and surrounding regions, where artisans celebrated the abundance of the French table through form and glaze. Humorous, charming and deeply craft-driven, these pieces were the pride of the French kitchen.

Provenance
France, mid-20th Century
