A refined French oval ravier in the 'Montigny' pattern by the prestigious Gien manufactory. Its aged cream background encircled by a delicate trailing border of teal green florals and foliage rendered in transferware. A ravier is a small oval serving dish, traditionally used at the French table for hors d'oeuvres, cornichons, olives, butter, or a scattering of radishes. This one is as beautiful empty as it is in use - on a set table, a kitchen shelf, or as part of a considered vignette. Stamped to the base with the Gien 'Porcelaine Opaque' and 'Terre de Fer' marks alongside the pattern name Montigny.

The Faïencerie de Gien was founded in 1821 by Englishman Thomas Hall, who brought fine English earthenware manufacturing techniques to the Loire Valley. By the late 19th century Gien had become France's most prestigious earthenware manufactory, producing refined transferware patterns for the French bourgeois table. The 'Montigny' pattern, with its elegant repeating floral border in deep teal, is characteristic of Gien's late 19th century production - restrained, beautifully drawn, and deeply French in its sensibility.
