An enchanting small French giltwood mirror in a cartouche form, its frame carved with a delicate beaded inner border. The warm, honeyed gilt has mellowed beautifully over time, its surface catching light with a lived-in glow that only age can produce. Fitted with a hook on the reverse for hanging. Perfectly scaled for a small powder room, a narrow wall, resting on a mantel, above a bedside table, or grouped with other mirrors and artworks in a gallery hang. The kind of piece that looks as though it has always been exactly where you put it.

This mirror draws from the rich French tradition of carving and gilding from the Louis XV period onward, when the cartouche form - asymmetric, curvaceous, shield-like - became one of the defining motifs of French decorative arts. Reinterpreted through the 20th century by artisan workshops across France and Italy, small gilt mirrors of this kind were a staple of the European domestic interior, prized for their ability to bring warmth, light and a sense of history to any space.
