'Sainte Vierge' - Virgin Mary - is a gouache painting that was sourced in Paris in the springtime. We couldn't leave her with her sorrowful, contemplative pose with a faint halo and downward gaze. Muted taupes, lilacs, greys, with a lapis blue background. A restrained and sympathetic colour scheme consistent with post-war French devotional art. You can see the dense, chalk matte texture and layering of the Gouache and the expressionist-modernist style with rough brushwork, rather than realism. The frame is truly just as breathtaking as the art within, with subtle carving details, aged layers of paint and antiqued timber. The mount itself has been freshly replaced by our framer and the sand coloured mount was chosen with intention to let the colours of the painting have breathing room to speak.
